Pokémon Go Community Day event

The Pokémon Go Community Day is a regular event in Niantic’s augmented reality game – a monthly event encouraging players to play together worldwide.

Each event will see featured Pokémon appear for a limited time – offering an exclusive move – and a resource bonus for the duration.

What is Pokémon Go’s Community Day event?

Designed to get people out and playing together at a certain time, each limited-time event will offer featured Pokémon with a unique and exclusive move that will spawn for three hours, alongside a resource bonus – such as double XP, Stardust or Lure Modules – as incentives to get out there and playing.

Developer Niantic hopes the regular event will add to the “excitement of local events and meetups”, suggesting it’s a good time to get your friends together at this set time, and possibly make a few new ones while out there.

The heightened player activity might make it easier to take on Raids and Gyms, so keep that in mind during the three hour period, as well as making savvy use of the resource multiplier in effect with things like Lucky Eggs and Stardust, too.

Featured Pokémon: Mudkip

Time: 4pm to 7pm in all regions, local time.

How useful is Mudkip?

Like with most starter Pokémon, Mudkip’s true usefulness comes into play when it has been fully evolved into Swampert.

Swampert is a dual type Pokémon – Water and Ground. This gives it a resistance to electric type moves, which would normally deal a critical hit to any water type Pokémon. It’s still not a top tier gym defender, but Swampert is good for knocking rival teams out of gyms and the lower tiered raids.

Even if you’re not planning on using Mudkip or its evolution for battling, then this is a useful day for collectors. Thanks to being a Gen 3 starter, Mudkip has a fairly uncommon appearance rate in the wild, so this is the perfect chance to fill in any missing, Mudkip related, Pokédex entries.

Will there be a shiny?

As always, Niantic never confirms shinies for Community Day, but at this point it’s a guarantee. With shiny rates increased during the Community Day event, this is the perfect time to get one (or ideally more, so you have one of each evolution).

Keep your eyes peeled then! And remember that Shinies don’t appear in the same place for everyone like high-IV Pokémon; there’s a random chance of each one that you start a battle with being shiny for you alone. Keep searching, and you should get a few.

How to prepare for Community Day

With 3x Catch XP combined with 3-Hour Lures, this is the perfect day to catch as many Pokémon as physically possible. The best way to take advantage of these bonuses is to find a set of PokéStops that are in quick walking distance or one another. You can then set up a Lure Module in one (or in multiple) and then walk between the PokéStops; taking advantage of the Lure and ensuring that you don’t run out of Poké Balls or Berries.

It’s also an ideal time to experiment with either a Glacial Lure, Mossy Lure or Magnetic Lure Modules. These special lures attract a specific type of Pokémon depending on your chosen Lure. If you wanted to catch Water or Ice Pokémon, for example, then you would use a Glacial Lure Module. These specialised Lure Modules cost 200 PokéCoins from the in-game shop. You’ll also want to use any Lucky Eggs you have in your inventory. These will add an 30 minutes of double XP to the 3x Catch XP running throughout the day. If you’re in need of a Lucky Egg, then complete part of the Jump-Start Research questline – you’ll receive two Lucky Eggs for each set of tasks you complete.

It’s also always a decent time to keep an eye out on any Field Research rewards you might have that can be crossed off. Community Days also have their own special Field Research tasks based on the specific Pokémon the day is highlighting. Completing these special Field Research tasks will grant you some additional rewards, so make sure you keep your eyes out for them!

As always, it may also be worth stockpiling Pinap Berries and Great or Ultra Balls, too. The Pinaps will increase your Candy gains – useful for evolving and powering up after the event ends – and you can really burn through Poké Balls over the course of the event.

A few new exciting additions are coming to the game – Armored Mewtwo, the tease of Shadow Pokémon and an on-going series of Pokémon Go Global Challenges. The 17th and 18th Pokémon Go Community Days:

Featured Pokémon: Slakoth

Exclusive Move: Body Slam

Date: Thursday, July 4th to Sunday, July 7th

How useful is Slakoth?

It’s pretty useful! Slakoth’s third stage evolution is Slaking, the tanky, solid Gym defender that isn’t quite as hamstrung by unusual stats as it is in the mainline games.

The exclusive move, Body Slam, doesn’t move the needle much in terms of making Slaking more viable, which is a surprise compared to the exclusive moves introduced in previous Community Days that can propel those creatures into being more competitive.

That said, normal types are never great attackers in Gyms or Raids, because Normal-type attacks aren’t super-effective against anything, so maybe we shouldn’t have got our hopes up. That said, it’s worth evolving one to get the move if you’re a completionist, so don’t forget to do so.

The 16th Pokémon Go Community Day:

Featured Pokémon: Torchic

Exclusive Move: Blast Burn

Date: Saturday, May 19th

Bonus Times: 3pm to 6pm in all regions, local time.

Bonus 1: 3x Catch Stardust

Bonus 2: 3-hour Lures

How useful is Torchic?

Fairly. It’s not the best Fire-type attacker or defender – there are an awful lot of legendaries for attacking things like Gyms and Raids, and a fair few alternatives for defending, but it’s still pretty handy.

The exclusive move, Blast Burn, makes it the best Fire Pokémon in damage output, but it won’t last as long as say Moltres – making it useful and powerful, but with some caveats.

Regardless of that, it was still a useful day for the collectors, with Torchic fairly uncommon in the wild thanks to it being a Gen 3 starter, and of course the promise of a Shiny on the day which is always nice to have.

The 15th Pokémon Go Community Day:

Featured Pokémon: Bagon

Exclusive Move: Outrage

Date: Saturday, April 13th

Bonus Times: 3pm to 6pm in all regions, local time.

Bonus 1: 3x Catch XP

Bonus 2: 3-hour Lures

How useful is Bagon?

A useful one! Bagon’s utility comes from it’s third-stage evolution of course, Salamence, which is a top-tier attacking Pokémon, albeit ever so slightly bettered in the Dragon and Flying-type category by Rayquaza and Dragonite.

That said, the exclusive move Outrage puts it around the same footing as Dragonite, so it was worth evolving your best ones on the day to learn it. Even if you forgot, it’s still a very strong alternative to those though if you need a few more Dragon-type attackers, or maybe fancy kitting it out as a Flying-type attacker for some variety.

It’s also a very rare spawn in the wild and only available in 10km Eggs, so this was a pretty good ‘mon for the day!

The 14th Pokémon Go Community Day:

Featured Pokémon: Treeko

Exclusive Move: Frenzy Plant

Date: Saturday, March 23rd

Bonus Times: 3pm to 6pm in all regions, local time.

Bonus 1: 1/4 Egg Hatch Distance

Bonus 2: 3-hour Lures

How useful is Treeko?

As with fellow Gen 2 starters Totodile and Cyndaquil – which were subject to previous Community Day events – Treecko’s usefulness comes with its third evolution Sceptile. Though not one to trouble the meta, Sceptile is a very good grass type if that is lacking in your lineup – and that’s without factoring in its Exclusive Move.
